Did you know that you can have high self-esteem AND low self-worth? It’s true! There’s a major difference between the two…

In this solo episode of Unconditionally Worthy, I talk about how you can experience high self-esteem and low-self worth at the same time. Then, I answer a listener’s question while sharing 4 ways you can practice self-compassion daily to decrease your negative self-talk and feel more worthy.

The Difference Between Self-Worth & Self-Esteem

Self-Esteem is about your abilities and what you believe you can achieve. It’s about feeling confident about what you do in the world and the skills you can develop. It’s very outward-looking. Oftentimes, we rely too much on self-esteem and it can become our only barometer for how we’re doing. This creates a huge blindspot!

In contrast, Self-Worth is about how we see ourselves, how we feel about ourselves, and how we treat ourselves. Self-Worth is often neglected, whether we realize it or not. Hello blindspot! It takes looking inward, looking inside yourself, to notice how you treat yourself and to truly embrace your unconditional worthiness.

So, how can you have high self-esteem AND low self-worth at the same time?

Even if you’re achieving really highly, you may still struggle to feel good about yourself.

Have you ever accomplished something huge, but still don’t feel like it’s enough?

Have you ever felt, while in the process of accomplishing something huge, you were beating yourself up, feeling overwhelmed and stressed, and overworking yourself?

Do you find it difficult to feel worthy and deserving of your accomplishments (aka imposter syndrome)?

These are signs you may be experiencing low-self worth and high self-esteem.

Listener Question: What are the daily things I can do to reduce my negative self-talk and feelings of unworthiness, especially when I feel like nothing is working for me?

Listen in to this episode to hear my full answer, but here are a few ways you can reduce negative self-talk and feel more worthy…

  • Practice self-compassion. Research shows that self-compassion is helpful in feeling more worthy, building resilience, boosting motivation, and feeling better about yourself. At the core, self-compassion is about treating yourself with care, respect, and love. It’s about practicing acceptance and honoring how you feel. When you practice self-compassion, we’re treating ourselves as if we already believe we’re worthy, just like you would with a loved one!

  • Implement these 4 core elements and phrases of self-compassion into your daily life:

    • Mindfulness - “I see you.”

    • Common Humanity - “I accept you.”

    • Self-Kindness - “I affirm you.”

    • Honoring Your Body - “I honor you.”

Practice seeing, accepting, affirming, and honoring yourself for one week and see how you feel. Once you integrate these phrases and practices into your daily life, you’ll find that negative self-talk will naturally turn into positive self-talk and you will feel more connected to your self-worth.

Remember, you don’t need to do this perfectly! If it feels overwhelming, just choose one phrase and stick to that for a week. Then, when you’re ready to step it up, take on another phrase to practice.

With Love,

Adia
